Introduction

Tzu Chi Academy Long Island(TCALI) in New York State is one of the 25 Tzu Chi Humanities Schools in the United States. It is also part of the educational cause of the four major missions of Tzu Chi Foundation, namely “Charity, Medicine, Education, and Culture”. Tzu Chi educators bring solid academic programs to students as well as character education. TCALI was founded in 1998 in Oyster Bay, NY. There are 25 Mandarin classes in this school, ranging from the Pre-K class to the 10th grade, plus the 3-year-old Toddler’s class, and 12 cultural classes. In 2023, TCALI was approved by Overseas Community Affairs Council to establish a Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML), so that more non-Mandarin-speaking parents and community members can learn Mandarin and traditional culture together.

Course Features

The Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) at Tzu Chi Academy Long Island (TCALI) offers 3 sessions per year, totaling 24 classes, each 3 hours long. Our curriculum, based on 'Let’s Learn Mandarin' materials supplemented with contemporary resources, emphasizes both language proficiency and Taiwanese cultural understanding. Sessions include language learning intertwined with Taiwanese cultural insights, covering traditional folk skills, festivals, and arts. Additionally, a dedicated cultural class offers immersive experiences in activities such as dragon and lion dances, calligraphy, tea ceremonies, and traditional snack sampling. Our communicative teaching style focuses on real-life scenarios, fostering rapid Mandarin fluency and confidence. TCML aims to equip students with both linguistic skills and cultural appreciation to thrive globally.
