There is a growing demand in the United States for learning the world’s second-largest language, Mandarin. To meet this demand, Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) was officially opened for operation on September 12, 2021. The enrollment targets mainstream individuals who is over 18 years old and is interested in learning Mandarin and traditional culture. At the Learning Center, students from the Tampa community learn Mandarin using traditional character writing, and also learn about the customs and culture of Taiwan. TCML aims to promote a deeper understanding of Taiwan, along with its freedom and democracy spirit.
Tampa Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning offers a full program for adults over 18, from beginner to Advanced level. We use not only the digital materials from “Huayu World”, but also textbooks provided by OCAC, “Let’s Learn Mandarin”, “Speak Mandarin in Five Hundred Words”, and “Speak Mandarin in One Thousand Words.” Our program allows students to choose from writing systems such as Bopomofo and pinyin to learn listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill. We also use mp3 audios to help with students’ pronunciations. Our center aims to provide a lively language learning environment that values “freedom and democracy while respecting cultural diversity”, we then enhance our learning approach with exposure to extra cultural curriculum. Beyond learning the language, students are encouraged to participate in our cultural courses, including calligraphy, Erhu, Ocarina, culinary, lion dance, drums, fan dance, diabolo yoyo and so on. The program would keep students engaged in the language and would help them appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity.
