San Mateo County Chinese School is a non-for-profit organization located in Burlingame, California, near San Francisco International Airport. Since our start in 1998, we have taught Mandarin to thousands of students, primarily K-12 age, especially for students from mixed-race families. With the increase in demand for adult classes, we're partnering with the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning to create an Adult Learning Center. Faculty at the school are leaders in the community who share a common passion for teaching and learning, and have created a supportive learning environment that is challenging, collaborative, and engaging. They adapt their teaching methods to each individual learning style and enable students in the classrooms to explore the world around us in a safe, encouraging environment.
Classes are taught in-person with the option to attend virtually. We teach students to listen to and speak Mandarin, as well as read, write, and type in traditional characters using both Zhuyin and Pinyin pronunciation systems.Course content is meant to both reflect students’ lives outside of class and also incorporate traditional culture into theirs. Language classes add activities that introduce students to folk festivals and traditions. For greater exposure, we also offer cultural courses to broaden students’ understanding of traditional culture with Taiwanese characteristics.Teachers tailor classes to suit all students’ learning styles, adjusting class content and pace where needed. We also provide online one-on-one for extra hours to strengthen the needs of students.
